How Regular is Irregular? 
Many of us have been taught since Junior High health class that a woman's menstrual cycle is 28 days long and that women ovulate on day 14. This is a myth. Most women quite simply do not have menstrual cycles that operate like Swiss clockwork. Did you know, for example, that a normal menstrual cycle can typically last between 23 and 35 days?
If you typically have a cycle that's not exactly 28 days long, and if your cycle varies in length from month to month, you're not alone. In fact, this is perfectly normal! Not only do menstrual cycles range anywhere from 21 to 35 days long, but your cycle may vary by as much as 7 days from one menstrual cycle to the next.
Often, irregularities in your cycle are temporary - a result perhaps of extra stress, intensive exercise and/or weight loss, or possibly even the result of a change in your diet.
One of the most important implications about the variations in menstrual cycles is this: You can not reliably predict when you'll ovulate on the basis of when your cycle started any particular month.
